FRIDAY BREW: WHAT I’VE LEARNED ABOUT THE WASH AND GO

It’s a lovely Friday morning and I’ve decided to step outside my coffee box and choose a different flavor of iced coffee. I’m currently sipping on a Cinnamon Dolce iced coffee, courtesy of none other than, Starbucks.
Today I’m discussing the 6 things I’ve learned about the wash and go style. I’ve struggled with this style for years and at one point completely wrote it off because it caused more damage than not. But I wanted to share some things I’ve learned about this style that have really changed the way I think about the overall health and look of my hair.
1. IT WILL NEVER BE THE SAME
My expectations were high for this hairstyle but I was completely oblivious to the fact that my hair will just never look the same each time I do this style. It’s inevitable. Kinks, curls and coils clump and lay however they choose and there is just not that much control over how it clumps together. The weather is major factor in how it looks as well. Humidity can make for some serious shrinkage and in my case-shrinkage and high volume.
2. JELLY OVER GEL
I’ve tried a plethora of gels in the past and they all seem to do the same thing for my hair (dry out, frizz and hardened the strands). The texture and consistency of a jelly provides the right amount and hold provides an amazing shine to each coil.
3. AIR DRYING VS. HOODED DRYER
After much debate, I’ve come to the conclusion that the hooded dryer is quicker but yields less than impressive results. My hair is extremely dense so the hooded dryer barely gets to the roots and I’m left with hair that is dry on top but roots that are frizzy and puffy. Air drying has worked for me and has provided optimal results. It takes forever but it is so worth it!
4. THE PICK
Most of the time, if i’m doing a wash and go, I’m looking for full volume! I get lots of volume from air drying but get maximum results from picking the roots. If I haven’t had my hair shaped into a nice defined cut, the pick usually helps me manipulate certain parts of my hair for maximum volume and shape.
5. CONVENIENCE
I made the big mistake of thinking this hairstyle would be a quick process. Like any other style,       I’ve learned that even this style won’t get me out the door in an hour. Because I have to use the shingling method to help define my curls and avoid frizz, it takes time to achieve this style. There is no quick fix for styling and the wash and go has reminded me of that many times.
6. DETANGLE
One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made with this style is thinking I didn’t have to do a thorough detangling session when in actuality this is one of those styles where detangling is a MUST. Because I thought a wash and go style was meant to be a quick 30 minute style; sort of a short cut when your on the go, I just completely wrote off detangling and did a quick finger detangle session. BAD IDEA. I realized that detangling is the number one thing to do and that had I done so, I would have not had so many single strand knots. Lesson learned 😦
Hope this info was helpful!

ANOTHER VINTAGE LOOK

Kicking off my marvelous Monday with some vintage love. Charlie and I were in Henderson, NC for a church service this past Sunday and I just had to get some pics of my yellow dress. It’s been collecting dust in my closet and this was a better time than any to break out for a wear. I’m kind of loving this whole vintage look. I’ve began collecting quite a few vintage inspired pieces. I feel the clothes really never go out of style and have the ability to be updated to a more modern look if you want. I like to invest in wardrobe pieces that have a timeless feel to them and can be mixed and matched with just about anything. I purchased this little yellow number from the Ann Taylor Loft last year during their fall sale. It’s a fall dress but the length and sleeve kind of make it wearable for any season. I paired it with some cuter green t-strap block heels. This is my second pair of t-strap block heels. They had so many colors to choose from but Green is my favorite color so the decision wasn’t that hard to make. I have a few dinners coming up this week and might break out these heels for dining and dancing. Wishing you lovelies a fabulous week.

VINTAGE LOOK WITH eShakti

I’m in love with something cherry red and white. Bet you didn’t guess it’s this amazing vintage dress. I was having a bit of a Dorthy Dandridge from Carmen Jones moment in this dress and was dying to share all the deets on this little red and white number from eShakti.com

I couldn’t wait to slip this dress on and strut my stuff around town. I added a touch of red lipstick, cute t-strap heels and oversized pearl earrings to play up this fun and flirty look. I was a bit reluctant about the red lipstick because it’s such a bold color to wear on your lips, but I figured this dress was a statement and thought my make-up should be too, so I just went for it. I had fun playing this look up, but aside from the fun of getting all dolled up for my night out with the hubby, I was pleased with my overall shopping experience with eShakti. This lightweight cotton dress is fresh, timeless and can be worn for many different occasions. I have to admit, when I put it on I felt like I was being transported to the Harlem Renaissance period at some swanky Jazz lounge being serenaded by the sounds of Duke Ellington. This dress let my imagination run away with me.

If your not much of a mall shopper but you’re on the hunt for a trendy dress that fits just right, eShakti.com is an awesome online store I highly recommend shopping. I’m not one of those women that can just go into a store and buy something right off the rack, sometimes my items have to be altered; so I was excited to find out that I could customize my dress, pants, or top for just $9.95. They provide simple instructions on how to measure, enter in your measurements for the item you want to purchase and Voila! Aside from being able to customize my dress for the perfect fit, I was really able to narrow down my dress search. I knew I wanted a red dress so I used the filter tool to search for red dresses. Doesn’t get any simpler than that. Allow me to put the icing on the cake and share that I also had the option of getting my dress with or without pockets, choosing the width of my dress straps and choosing my dress length (tea-length in this case).

<> In case you’re wondering, i’m currently obsessing over the
Blue-Red Brooklyn Dress. I’m thinking this dress will transport me to a fun summer week in Cali, all expenses paid of course :).
